What is Mindfulness?
Mindfulness meditation is about focusing in the moment – developing awareness in the absence of judgment. By concentrating on the moment without dwelling on the past or the future, we can learn to distance ourselves from disturbing thoughts and emotions, better able to observe and accept without anger, fear or reactivity.
Why Mindfulness Training?
Stress, anxiety and depression are increasingly prevalent in today's society. We have more on our plates than ever and spend much of our time multi-tasking - losing the capacity to be in and enjoy unique moments of experience. Mindfulness Training facilitates well-being, diminishes suffering and teaches us to live rather than rush through our lives.
Extensive research has shown the benefits of mindfulness training for adults and, more recently, for children and adolescents. Significant improvements have been demonstrated in multiple areas, including:
• Attention/concentration.
• Emotion regulation/distress tolerance.
• Impulse control.
• Decision-making.
• Academic and work performance.
• Empathy/compassion.
• Anxiety/stress and depression.
• Aggressive behaviour/bullying.
• Chronic pain.
• Immune function.
• High blood pressure.
